FIPS Certification Underscores Tropos’ Commitment to Strong Security for Building Government and Smart Grid Networks

SUNNYVALE, CA -- January 12, 2010 – Tropos Networks, the market leader in IP broadband mesh networks announced that its complete line of routers and its carrier class network management platform, Tropos Control, have achieved Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2 certification.  “Achieving this significant milestone demonstrates Tropos’ commitment to providing the high levels of security needed by government customers and by utilities as they deploy Smart Grids,” said Tom Ayers, president and chief executive officer of Tropos.

FIPS 140-2 is an established cyber security standard for the design and implementation of cryptographic systems, including hardware and software, that is widely used by Federal organizations for the protection of sensitive or valuable data.  Given the critical role of data communications in enabling Smart Grids, security of these networks will be vital.  While there are several security standards being actively developed to address security for Smart Grids, including NERC CIP and AMI-SEC, there are several mature standards such as FIPS 140-2 that should be leveraged as building blocks of Smart Grid security.

Available immediately, FIPS 140-2 is offered as an option for Tropos’ line of outdoor fixed and mobile mesh routers and for Tropos Control.  Tropos customers may purchase an upgrade for products already installed in the field to make them FIPS 140-2 compliant.
